Marion County issued the following announcement on November 16.
The county commission recognized Florence Pritchard on Nov. 16, for her help promoting literacy and public service in Marion County. In honor of her efforts, the county commission announced it was renaming the meeting room at Freedom Public Library in southwest Ocala the “Florence Fay Pritchard Meeting Room.”
Pritchard — who is 85 years old and holds a doctorate degree in administration, supervision, and curriculum development — joined the Friends of the Freedom Public Library after moving to Marion County in 2012. She immediately assumed a leadership role with the organization, serving as both vice president and eventually president — a role she continues to hold today.
She was a key part of developing and guiding the Marion County Friends Council and bringing together the various Friends of the Library groups around the county.
Pritchard also is an author of short stories, plays, and novels. And with a 35-year history serving others as an educator, administrator, and college vice president, she has dedicated her life to serving others through education. This dedication shows through a book she co-authored to help teach middle and high school students the importance of community service and civic engagement.
At the meeting, county commissioners called Pritchard to the stage to highlight the work she has done in aid of local libraries, as well as to award her a certificate of recognition. Members of her family, along with several others involved with the Friends of the Freedom Public Library then joined her on stage for a photo op.
Marion County is proud to be home to citizens such as Pritchard who dedicate their time and efforts to making life better for all of us. Through educators like her, Marion County will continue to be a great place to live and learn for generations to come.
