Marion County Employees Help Local Children Through Salvation Army Angel Tree Program
Dozens of Angel Tree gifts line the conference room in the Marion County Human Resources building on Wednesday, December 7.
The Marion County Board of County Commissioners is proud to bring back the Salvation Army Angel Tree program on the McPherson Government Campus. This is the second year the program has enabled Marion County employees to adopt an “Angel” and provide a child with their wants for a special Christmas. The Angel Tree program was created by The Salvation Army in 1979 by Majors Charles and Shirley White when they worked with a Lynchburg, Virginia shopping mall to provide clothing and toys for children at Christmas. The program got its name because Charles and Shirley identified the wishes of local children by writing their gift needs on greeting cards featuring pictures of angels and placing them on a Christmas Tree at the mall. Thanks to Charles and Shirley, who were assigned by the Salvation Army to the Lynchburg area at the time, more than 700 children had a brighter Christmas that first year.Marion County is proud to adopt this program into its employee culture. Through it, Marion County employees were able to help approximately 100 families within the county! These children and families will receive toys, school/casual clothing, toiletries, books, and other necessary items. All donations stay within the community and impact families right here in Marion. For more information on the Angel Tree program or to learn how to give this holiday season please visit salvationarmyflorida.org/Ocala or call (352) 629-2004.
