For the past several weeks, Marion County’s public agencies, businesses and citizens have partnered to collect donations for Marion’s neediest families and help them “Bring the Harvest Home” this holiday season.
Those efforts will culminate on Friday, Dec. 2 with a Holiday Food Drive on the Ocala Downtown Square. Residents and businesses wishing to take part in the event may stop by the Square and drop off their canned food, baby and toiletry donations from 7:30 a.m.- 1:30 p.m. Those who stop by with donations are also invited to enjoy a cup of hot chocolate and cookie, courtesy of the Marion County Board of County Commissioners and the other elected officials of Marion County.
“This holiday food drive will be one last push to help re-stock area pantries’ shelves with the food and goods that will carry our neighbors in need through the holidays,” Marion County Commissioner Kathy Bryant said. “We encourage everyone to bring their donations to the Square as we celebrate the spirit of the season with thoughtful giving.”
Local pantries are in most need of the following items:
- Dry goods/foods that complement dry goods (rice, pasta, pasta sauce, cereal, crackers, peanut butter and jelly).
- Canned meats (corned beef, corned beef hash, ham and tuna).
- Canned vegetables and fruit.
- Baby items (powdered formula, diapers and lotion).
- Toiletries (soap, shampoo, deodorant, toothbrushes, toothpaste and toilet paper).
Also, as a reminder, at 10 a.m. on Friday, there will be a group picture with all of the constitutional officers and partners who have worked together to make this event happen. Media is welcome to attend!
